Reception - Chinese New Year 2025!

Lesson: EYFS

Class: Reception Year: 2024 - 2025

We have been learning all about Chinese Lunar New Year!

  • Firstly we found out where China was in the world and learnt about the Great Wall of China! We recreated this famous wonder in our classroom and built the great wall of St Paul’s.
  • We have learnt about the zodiac animals in the story of ‘The Great Race’, and how to say ordinal numbers such as ‘first, second, third, all the way to ‘twelfth’.
  • We made dragon puppets learning how to fold paper into a concertina. We listened to Chinese music and danced with our dragons and ribbon sticks. We made lanterns, practising our scissor skills. We learnt that lanterns and light were an important part of Chinse New Year, to bring good luck. We also made spiral bouncy snakes as 2025 will be the year of the snake.
  • We wrote about what year we were born in, and found out we are a class of pigs and rats! Whose characteristics included being
    clever, kind and charming!
  • On Thursday we had our Chinese banquet. We all helped to cut up vegetables, being taught how to safely use knives (the same as those we use for lunch). We then watched how the food was cooked, and ate with chopsticks in our Chinese restaurant. (photos online) It was wonderful! Everybody tried the food, and many of us had seconds!
  • We took home lucky red envelopes, as these are gifted to people on Chinese New Year with money inside. Ours contained a yummy chocolate coin!
