Science

Science Statement of Intent:

At St Paul’s C. E. Primary School, our intent is to stimulate the children’s curiosity about Science, in order for them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding. We want to develop children’s ideas and ways of working to enable them to make sense of the world in which they live.

Our curriculum ensures that all children are taught age appropriate Science subject knowledge as laid out by the National Curriculum and enables children to develop a range of Scientific skills that are useful across the whole curriculum.

Implementation:

At St.Paul’s Primary school, we make the learning of Science interactive and engaging through the use of correct scientific resources and activities. To ensure high standards of teaching and learning, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.  We use the Plymouth Science scheme of work which includes:

  • Pre learning, from previous year groups and lessons.

  • Cross curricular links across modules

  • Each lesson contains knowledge, working scientifically and scientific enquiry objectives.

  • Embedded working scientifically assessment.

  • Hands on learning in each lesson.

  • Metacognitive approaches which include mini quizzes, recapping, revisiting knowledge.

  • Knowledge quizzes at the end of each unit.

Statement of Impact:

The impact of Science at St.Paul’s is that we ensure our children progress to secondary school with the enthusiasm to want to know more about the world and the skills to enable them to work scientifically at a deeper level. We provide children with the foundations and knowledge for understanding the world, aiming to ignite their interest in a range of Science-based subjects, promoting STEM subjects so that children learn about the possibilities for future careers in Science.

Children not only acquire the appropriate age-related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.
